Our First Ever Beach Week! Pt.2 Outer Banks
Hi, friends! Back today (better late than never!!!) with part 2 of Our First Ever Beach Week! For the second leg of the trip, we booked a place in the town of Manteo in the Outer Banks. Manteo is a charming little coastal town. We were in walking distance (or a short driving distance) from downtown which we walked around every day while we were in town.
Downtown Books was one of the cute local shops in Downtown Manteo. It is on the smaller side but it was packed with adorable bookish items and a great selection of titles. Of course, I had to leave with a souvenir–I picked up a copy of A Happier Life by a North Carolina author Kristy Woodson Harvey, which I first learned about in Beaufort earlier during Beach Week!
Rex and I regularly frequent museums on our travels but I must say Roanoke Island Festival Park Adventure Museum is a very cool museum to visit! There is so much to see from the replica of the ship Elizabeth II to reenactment sites… $11 adult admission price felt too good to be true!!
While we stayed in Manteo, we obviously had to venture out to the main Barrier Islands. Rex had been to Outer Banks before a long time ago so he brought me to Kill Devil Frozen Custard on our first night. Though I’m not a huge dessert person, I get the hype!
Rex also insisted on seeing the sunset at Jockey’s Ridge State Park, which I didn’t really fully comprehend until we arrived there and there were so many others doing the same! It is bit of a walk out there (versus the stroll I was expecting) but the sunset view was stunning (it is one of those fake West coast sunsets).
While we were on out on the coast, our #1 priority was eating as much seafood as we could fit in. To accomplish this mission, we squeezed in one last seafood meal at I Got Your Crabs in Kitty Hawk. We had clams, oysters, soft shell crab, and more, and our only regret is not eating more oysters (they were marked MP but were only $1.50 each)!
One of the highlights from Beach Week was this Hokey Pokey ice cream from KEYZ New Zealand Style Ice Cream that had just opened in Nags Head. We used to regularly have Hokey Pokey ice cream from Don’t Tell Mother and had been missing this sweet treat so. If you’ve never had Hokey Pokey, know that it’s what (my) dreams are made of.
All in all, our inaugural beach week was a success, and we hopefully plan to make this an annual thing!
